Google Partners with Ethicon Suture to Expand into Robotic Surgery

Most companies create divisions below it.  Google has created “Alphabet” above itself and now Google is just one subsidiary of Alphabet.  Each division of Alphabet has different goals such as “GoogleX” (Self-driving cars, GoogleGlass, etc.) or Calico  AKA the “Life Sciences Team” which focuses on, “health, well-being and longevity.”

Now Google has announced a partnership with Ethicon (of Johnson and Johnson) to develop surgical robotics.  Ethicon is the largest supplier of veterinary AND human suture.  Ethicon’s market share in the US is an astounding 80%.

The new partnership is described, “The companies seek to develop new robotic tools and capabilities for surgeons and operating room professionals that integrate best-in-class medical device technology with leading-edge robotic systems, imaging and data analytics.”

As with all trickle down technology (Human => Veterinary) it will be interesting to see how long until this technology is seen in the human operating room.  Then we’ll see how long before Humane Societies and others are automating some portions of spay and neuters which are arguably much more routine than any human surgery.
